Dr. Sean Damer started his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer in Sociology in the School of Architecture & Urban Planning at the University of Strathclyde in 1969. Subsequently, he taught sociology in Trinity College, Dublin; the University of Manchester; (then) Paisley College; was Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Housing Studies at the University of Glasgow; and finally held the same post in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology, from which he received early retirement in 1999. In 1990 he was Visiting Professor in the "Amsterdam Chair" at the University of Amsterdam's Centre for Metropolitan Studies/Department of Sociology. He is currently engaged in a British Academy-funded ethnographic research project into the British expatriate community in Apokoronas, Crete.
