What can I do with my degree?

SPS Destinations

The specific skills and techniques gained by studying a SPS degree can be useful in numerous jobs.

Professions include:

  • marketing associate professionals
  • business associated professionals
  • HR related roles

Other areas of work may include:

  • politics and government
  • policy work
  • charity and development work
  • journalism
  • accountancy
  • social and political research
  • and education

More than a fifth of graduates go on to further study and may choose to specialise in a particular subject at Masters level or broaden their opportunities and move into careers such as law and journalism.

Career planning is all about knowing yourself, knowing what's out there, making decisions and then implementing them. The first steps can be the hardest so use The Careers Service resources to start your journey.

The Careers Service provides information, advice and guidance to help students and recent graduates explore different career options and make decisions for the future.

Explore your Options 

The Careers Service has resources to help you explore a diverse range of career options. You can browse resources or to ask staff for help in researching your career areas of interest. A good place to start is with the Occupations section of the Careers service website.

Talk to a Careers Consultant

You can talk over your options with a Careers Consultant or get feedback on applications through a short or long appointment. You can pre-book the appointment through MyCareerHub.

Explore Further Study

If you'd like information and advice on further study options here and abroad, or to find out about funding, then call into the Careers Service or take a look at the further study options within SPS.

Looking for Work

You'll find graduate vacancies plus part-time, vacation and voluntary work opportunities via the Looking for Work section of the Careers Service website, including access to My Careers Hub, exclusively for current students and graduates of the University of Edinburgh. 

Advice & Events

We have a range of reference materials in the Careers Service to help you with the job applicaiton process.  We offer a range of lunchtime workshops on a range of topics.  All workshops will be advertised via MyCareersHub.  You can also book a mock interview, to get some practice before you go for the real thing.
