Description

This workshop is designed to suit 2nd year students at The University of Edinburgh, however is open to all Undergraduate levels of study.

At this stage in your academic career, you are faced with increasingly complex, diverse assignments and non-familiar situations to navigate. This necessitates a step up in creative problem-solving techniques and critical thinking skills to support academic success. Creativity is a key component of innovation and complex problem-solving skills are in high demand in the workplace.

This workshop is designed to foster a curious and imaginative mindset. Students will build confidence in re-defining problems and using effective questioning techniques. Understanding the stages of the creative process, they will learn their natural inclinations and develop strategies to maximise their creative capability. This content will provide a solid foundation for their future academic journey and beyond. The ability to self-manage and be proactive become increasingly important as course demands grow.

Diverse assignments and extra-curricular activities present ample opportunities for students to develop their initiative. At the core of self-drive is self-belief and the confidence and courage to take independent action. This workshop will build students’ awareness of the barriers blocking initiative and develop techniques for managing these. Using personal reflection practices, they will develop their self-efficacy. They will learn how to use the ‘circle of control’ to identify where to focus their time and energy for maximum effect. The content will provide a solid foundation for their future academic journey and beyond

Learners will understand:

•How to effectively ask questions to increase understanding, including critical reflection.
•The Creative process -preparing, incubating, insight and evaluation.
•Problem Framing – who, what, why, where.
