Planning for Resilience: Building a Plan for Wellbeing During Fieldwork
Description
This workshop is designed for PG students intending to conduct in-person or remote fieldwork. This workshop is best-suited for students who have not yet begun field research or work-based placements, and are in the process of completing their pre-departure risk assessments.
The workshop will offer university ethics and risk assessments as a framework for considering potential challenges to student emotional wellbeing. We’ll explore the concept of resilience in high-stress environments, as well as the challenges of isolation, fatigue, burnout, and vicarious traumatization. This interactive session will provide participants with real-life scenarios and encourages students to contemplate wellbeing challenges associated with their own field site, while developing strategies for mitigating risk. Participants will leave with an action plan and practical techniques to safeguard wellbeing and strengthen resilience during and after the field.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
● Challenge narratives around right of passage and valorisation of risk within academia;
● Consider opportunities for including risks to mental safety and mitigation strategies within their risk assessments;
● Learn practical, mindfulness-based techniques for self-regulation and boundary setting
