PhD Study Space

Body

There are four types of study space available to PhD students within the School (SPS) and University.

SPS PhD Allocated Desk

These are allocated desks within the School, specifically for SPS PhD programme students. Eligibility criteria can be viewed in the Terms & Conditions.

Please ensure you only use the designated desk you have been allocated to ensure your peers can use the desks they have been allocated. Note that desks are allocated on availability and we are not able to accommodate desk changes unless circumstances are exceptional.

Visiting PhD Students are not eligible for SPS PhD programme allocated desks and are encouraged to use the alternative study space options.

All allocated desk requests must be submitted via the waiting list form which is open for submission year-round and will be regularly reviewed by the PGR Support team for new allocations where possible. The PGR Support team will advise you of the outcome of your waiting list submission. Please ensure you are logged in to MyEd before you access the waiting list form.

Desk numbers in allocated rooms: 117 in 27/28 George Square and 14 in Chrystal Macmillan Building - PIN access may be required

BookED / Hot Desks

This new School reservation system is for SPS staff and PhD students and was brought in to make the best use of our space. BookED is intended for short-term use of workspaces. Bookable locations are available from 6am to 10pm, Monday to Friday, and you can block book multiple days.

Some of these desks are dedicated to PhD students only and can be found in the West Wing. This is located in rooms 3.18 and 3.19 of the William Robertson Wing, Old Medical School, and is accessed via the 5th floor of the Chrystal Macmillan building, by lift and stairway 2. Access is restricted to PhD students and relevant staff and PIN access may be needed for out of hours access.

The West Wing contains two rooms, the first of which is a hotdesk and communal area, with the second room being reserved for quiet study.

Desk numbers in West Wing: 72 across 2 rooms

Please be considerate of other users of the School space. For health and safety reasons, we have a 'no sleeping on the premises' policy. If you are in need of housing support, please contact The Advice Place.

Access to BookED can be found in the Terms & Conditions.

SeatEd and other study space

There is other study space available on campus. The SeatEd service provides temporary bookable study space for all University of Edinburgh students. There is a dedicated PGR study space in 40 George Square, bookable via SeatEd. Additionally the 5th floor of the Main Library is a dedicated PGR area.

The full range of University study space can be found here.
