Description

The direction and challenges of addressing domestic abuse in Scotland: Findings from 3 doctoral projects.

In this seminar three social workers will present the findings of their cutting edge doctoral research projects on different aspects of working with domestic abuse in Scotland.

  • The first presentation discusses how risk is constructed and enacted in a multi-agency context for domestic abuse victims, with a focus on the role of Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conferences (MARACs) in Scotland.
  • In the second, Charlene Chalmers outlines the emergent findings from her interviews with children and families’ social workers around their preparedness through education and training in responding to domestically abusive fathers and their victims, highlighting the need for transformative change.
  • Finally, Gill McKinna explores how behavioural change programmes motivate men to address their domestic abuse behaviours.

The presentations will be followed by a time for discussion around the challenges to addressing domestic abuse in Scotland, and the ways forward.

This seminar will be chaired by Dr Eve Mullins, Lecturer in Social Work, School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh.
