Description

Title: Migrant integration and education in the Global South: the case of Argentina

Abstract:

The migrant status of individuals is a central determinant of opportunities in destination societies. However, most empirical and theoretical work on migrant integration focuses on South-North migration, even though that comprises only a third of total international migration flows. Comparable numbers of international migrants are migrating within the Global South and they need to be included in our research agendas, in order to validate and extend our understanding of migrant integration patterns. GLAM—Global South Migration and Comparative Integration: a study of South American Migrants (MSCA-H2020, GA# 101023322) addresses this concern by studying integration patterns of South American migrants and their children across different Southern and Northern contexts. The presentation will introduce the overall aims of the project and then focus on preliminary analyses on educational outcomes carried out in Argentina, the main destination country among South-South migrants in South America. Using IPUMS Census microdata (2001 & 2010), in combination with aggregated Census data, the presentation shows patterns of educational attainment and educational mobility of the children of migrants from the most numerous South American groups (Peruvians, Bolivians, Chileans, Paraguayans and Uruguayans), in comparison with majoritarian native Argentineans. The results show that children with migrant origins are less dependent on their parental educational origins, with different implications for their opportunities.

The Edinburgh Sociology Seminar Series is a weekly series convened by Dr Christopher Barrie. Seminars take the format of a 45-60 minute research talk followed by 30-45 minute Q&A. We look forward to welcoming you there!
