Exhibition: #MeToo in China
An exhibition in the Chrystal Macmillan Building Foyer.
Since its appearance in 2018, the hashtag #MeToo has spread around the globe.
This exhibition traces the history of the #MeToo movement in China using visual, audio and textual materials that present both the personal struggles of sexual assault survivors and collective feminist actions against sexual violence in the Chinese context. The show was inspired by #MeToo in China exhibitions held in Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou and New York in 2019.
Drawing on materials from those exhibitions, it also brings in new perspectives, presenting the activities of Chinese feminists in support of the Chinese #MeToo movement in the UK, and is curated by Mushroom Sisters, a UK-based group of feminist student-activists.
The staging of the exhibition at the University of Edinburgh is supported by GENDER.ED and the School of Social and Political Science EDI Committee, with a view to promoting awareness and dialogue on the important issue of gender-based violence.
