New Directions Conference

13 - 14 May 2024
09:00 - 17:00

Venue

Violet Laidlaw Room, CMB

Description

This conference will bring together researchers across our subject area with different cultural backgrounds and research interests. The focus of the conference is on exploring new directions in sociology, such as how academia has been reshaped by the growing twenty-first century significance of creation and imagination, the impact of social media, climate emergency, the crisis of the humanities and social science, as well as an increasingly global refugee crisis and regional conflicts.

Conference talks from doctoral researchers will explore important themes such as the impact of disasters, emerging forms of national identity, social inequality in education and family, ongoing processes of urban reconstruction, and the spread of new forms of art and aesthetics. We are also delighted to offer an opening keynote lecture on the sociology of emotion, and the first day of the conference will close with the Goffman memorial lecture delivered by Prof. Susie Scott.

Join us to hear from our academic community on the latest sociological research and thinking. Network with colleagues in the subject area whilst enjoying lunch and refreshments across the two days.
