Stories of Divided Politics: Polarisation and Bridge-Building in Colombia and Britain
Venue
Conference Room 3.15Description
Collective Brainstorming brown-bag session – please feel welcome to bring your lunch
Hosted by Gwen Burnyeat
Colombia and Britain both held referendums in 2016 – in Colombia on a peace accord, in Britain on Brexit – leaving enduring identity divides, and fostering widespread narratives about each society being more divided than ever. Stories of Divided Politics is a new, five-year research project, anchored in political anthropology and drawing also on polarisation studies, that seeks to understand how people in both countries experience and (re-)produce political divisions through everyday stories, and how myriad individuals and organisations attempt to build bridges across difficult political divides. The aim of this session is to brainstorm with colleagues working on similar issues, draw on collective wisdom to think creatively beyond the original grant proposal as I set up the project, identify questions and potential field partners and sites, and explore avenues for future collaboration.
