Description

The second event in our 22/23 Social Work Seminar Series, presented by Professor Ramona Alaggia from the University of Toronto, in collaboration with Children 1st, Scotland's National Children's Charity.

Disclosing any form of gender-based violence -be it child sexual abuse, sexual assault, domestic abuse, or elder abuse -is fraught with issues of safety and trust. These issues are at the very foundation of building collaborative and empowering relationships with clients who have experienced abuse and violence. By reflecting on our practice experiences this talk will: 1) probe how we can respond to disclosures more effectively in trauma informed ways; 2) address questions of how we know if we are adhering to the principles of trauma informed practice and; 3) explore how we promote resilience through a trauma informed approach.

Professor Ramona Alaggia bio:
Dr. Ramona Alaggia is a Professor in the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto where she is the Margaret & Wallace McCain Chair in Child & Family. She studies disclosure processes with sexual abuse survivors and survivors of intimate partner violence to develop trauma and resilience informed practices. Dr. Alaggia has conducted large nationally funded studies leading research teams to explore the lived experiences of abuse survivors, immigrant and refugee families affected by trauma and violence, and social service providers serving these populations. She strives to promote child advocacy at all levels. Her textbook, “Cruel but not Unusual: Violence in Canadian Families, is used in professional practice schools across Canada and is in its 3rd Ed printing run.
