School of Social and Political Science (SPS) academic Dr Mohammad Amir Anwar has received a prestigious Future Leaders Fellowship (FLF) from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

Dr Anwar, a Lecturer in African Studies and International Development at SPS, is one of UKRI’s 68 new Future Leaders Fellows. The UKRI will provide the fellows with £104 million in total to lead research into global issues and to commercialise their innovations in the UK. The scheme provides long-term support to enable early career academics to tackle ambitious research and develop their careers.

Dr Anwar’s project, titled ‘Planetary Networks of the Artificial Intelligence Systems: Human Workers and Labour Markets in the Global South’, will examine the role of human labour in the makings of planetary artificial intelligence (AI) systems, with a specific focus on India, Kenya, Uganda and Colombia. The project will leverage cross-country partnerships to contribute to the academic and policy debates surrounding AI, employment and poverty reduction, and will be crucial in shaping the future rounds of digital-related development projects in low- and middle-income countries.
