Professor Vernon Gayle has become a new Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) fellow for 2024.
Professor Gayle, who works at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Social and Political Science (SPS), is one of 57 new fellows elected to join the RSE from across the sciences, education, the arts, business and public life.
The RSE is Scotland’s national academy, which provides independent expert advice to policymakers and aims to inspire the next generation of innovative thinkers. The collective knowledge of the fellows contributes to the social and economic wellbeing of Scotland, its people and the nation’s wider contribution to the global community.
A Professor of Sociology and Social Statistics, Professor Gayle is currently the interim Director of the Research Training Centre at SPS. His research interests include social stratification, the sociology of youth and the sociology of education. He has substantial and significant expertise in the analysis of large-scale and complex social science datasets, statistical modelling, longitudinal data, administrative social science data, missing data methods, transparent and reproducible research, and open social science.
SPS’ Head of School, John Devaney, said: “It is no surprise that Vernon’s work and achievements have been recognised by The Royal Society of Edinburgh, and I’m delighted that the School is able to benefit from his significant contribution across both teaching and research. Vernon has been a champion of the development of quantitative methods in research, and also in ensuring that the School supports social science graduates to have the quantitative skills that will support wider society to deal with the many challenges we face.”
