School of Social and Political Science (SPS) academic Emily Mann has been included on the Young Women’s Movement’s 30 Under 30 list for her involvement in feminist and disability advocacy.
The Young Women’s Movement is Scotland’s national organisation for young women and girls’ leadership and rights. Annually, it celebrates Scotland’s most inspiring young women, girls and non-binary people through its 30 Under 30 list.
Emily, a PhD student in the Sociology subject area at SPS, was included on the list for her voluntary and campaigning work in feminism and disability. Emily volunteers with SWAN Scotland - through which she supports autistic women and non-binary people in Scotland - and is part of the Advisory Group for the Independent Review of Adult Disability Payment in Scotland. Emily is also leading the Scottish expansion of a participatory research project, ‘Changing Realities’, that shares the everyday experiences of families living on low income to advocate for urgent social security reform.
Emily, an Associate Fellow at SPS, researches how women in Scottish policing negotiate their gender identity in the context of cultural reform. Emily has tutored on Understanding Gender in the Contemporary World and has been nominated by students for a number of teaching awards.
Emily said: "I am truly honoured to be included in this joyous celebration of Scotland's phenomenal feminist change-makers. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my many mentors, within SPS and beyond, whose kindness, support and encouragement have been instrumental to my academic journey, this award and my personal growth. I thank you all!"
