No Other Planet – a book exploring how utopias in fiction can help understand real-world climate challenges – by Professor Mathias Thaler has been shortlisted for the Political Studies Association (PSA) Mackenzie Book Prize.
No Other Planet examines visions of utopia with a focus on how they address one of the most pressing challenges - how to inhabit a climate-changed world.
In the book, Professor Thaler – Chair of Political Theory at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Social and Political Science – takes readers on a tour of contemporary utopian thought. He argues that tackling climate change inevitably gives rise to utopian ideas and projects.
No Other Planet is one of five books shortlisted for the award.
The PSA is the UK’s leading professional association dedicated to supporting and promoting the study and public understanding of politics. Its annual Mackenzie Book Prize celebrates books that make distinctive contributions to advancing the broad field of political studies. The awarding panel looks for books that are of international quality and that contribute to debates of wider social or political significance.
The winner will be announced on 25 March at the PSA’s annual conference in Glasgow.
No Other World was published by Cambridge University Press in 2022.
