The work of School of Social and Political Science (SPS) academics Dr Ewan Robertson and Professor Jochen Clasen has been recognised with awards from the Social Policy Association (SPA).
The SPA – a society and charity aiming to advance the teaching, research and dissemination of knowledge in the field of social policy – presents annual awards recognising the work of academics who are researching, teaching and advancing the discipline.
Dr Ewan Robertson, a Teaching Fellow in Comparative Social Policy at SPS, won the Excellence in Doctoral Research award for his paper ‘Puzzling over Powering? Explaining In-Work Benefit Trajectories in France and the United Kingdom, 1990s – 2020s’. This is awarded to a doctoral research student who presents a paper at the previous year’s SPA conference which is considered as an example of excellence in social policy scholarship.
Professor Jochen Clasen, an Emeritus Professor of Comparative Social Policy at SPS, won the Outstanding Achievement in Social Policy award. This award recognises academics who have made an outstanding and sustained contribution to advancing social policy scholarship.
Commenting on his award, Dr Robertson said: “I was delighted to receive this award, especially for a paper which summarised the main findings and arguments of my doctoral thesis. I thank all those involved in managing and judging the SPA’s awards, and my former PhD supervisors here at SPS – Professors Daniel Clegg and Jochen Clasen – for their guidance and support throughout my doctorate”.
The SPS academics received two of the six prizes announced at this year’s SPA awards. Nominations were judged by a panel of senior scholars and a senior policy practitioner, comprising: Professor Jane Millar (University of Bath), Professor Rod Hick (Cardiff University), Professor Jon Glasby (University of Birmingham), and Helen Barnard (Director of Policy, Research and Impact at the Trussell Trust).
The 2024 award winners were announced at the SPA 2024 conference at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.
Congratulations, Ewan and Jochen!
