School of Social and Political Science (SPS) student Mohammed Hafiz Musah is one of only 50 students worldwide to become a Global Student Prize 2023 finalist, for his work supporting small businesses in Ghana.

The Global Student Prize recognises exceptional students who have made a tangible impact on society and the lives of their peers. It is awarded annually to one student from anywhere in the world, who is reshaping our planet for the better. The winner is chosen by a panel including educational experts, entrepreneurs, and philanthropists.

Mohammed has been recognised for his role in helping small businesses improve their stability, scalability, and sustainability, mostly through his company FarmAsyst, an agri-tech startup which works to make small businesses more viable in his native Ghana.

A student of the MSc International Development programme at SPS, Mohammed has already achieved recognition at a continental level, winning awards from The Youth Consortium and the African Union as Youth Champion for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa in 2022.

If he wins the $100,000 prize, Mohammed plans to use the funds to accelerate and scale FarmAsyst’s programmes in Ghana.

Mohammed said: “Being a finalist of the Global Student Prize 2023 brings me so much joy and excitement. It feels good to impact lives, but it feels even better to be acknowledged and given new motivation.

"I see this as a challenge and an opportunity to continue collaborating with a wider range of international partners in the advancement of youth development and women empowerment for food security in Africa and beyond.

“For me, this is a victory for everyone: a win to all students in the world making a difference in the lives of others; a win for the University of Edinburgh for the new learnings on my programme; a win for my team at FarmAsyst, and especially a win for the youth of Ghana and Africa.”

The Global Student Prize was launched in 2021 to publicise the efforts of students producing dedicated work in international development. The 2023 winner will be announced at a prize ceremony later this year.
