Richard Hoggett

Job Title

Research Fellow (Electric Power Innovation for a Carbon-free Society)

Research interests

Background

Richard is a Research Fellow within the UK team of EPICS (Electric Power Innovation for a Carbon-free Society). This global centre which includes the US and Australia, is working towards the transition of electricity grids powered entirely by renewable energy. The Edinburgh research is investigating the conditions under which policymakers, regulators and grid operators can accelerate the delivery of demand-side flexibility and local integration; going beyond technical innovation to consider the governance strategies needed to integrate large amounts of consumer flexibility.

Prior to joining Edinburgh, Richard worked with Cardiff University on knowledge management, engagement, and dissemination for the national EnergyREV consortium; and was part of the Flex-Cool-Store project working on policy for overheating and cooling in UK homes. He has worked extensively on energy policy and governance as part of what was the Energy Policy Group (EPG) at Exeter University, including the impactful projects on Innovation and Governance for Future Energy Systems (IGov) and Energy Security in a Multi-polar World. Working in sustainable energy since 1996, he has supported the implementation of low carbon energy projects and managed national, regional and local campaigns and support programmes to reduce emissions. Including time at the Centre for Sustainable Energy and within other environmental NGOs, he has carried out research and delivered projects for government, industry, local authorities, communities, schools and the general public.
