Dr Western is a lecturer in International Relations and Quantitative Methods. Shaina received her PhD in Political Science from the University of California, Davis in 2015. She worked at the University of Oxford from 2015 to 2018, where she was a departmental lecturer in association with Somerville College. 

Her research focuses on issues around international cooperation, negotiations, human rights, international law, and international organisations. Her research has been published or is forthcoming at journals such as the British Journal of Political Science, International Studies Quarterly, and the European Journal of Political Research.
