Dr Philip Rathgeb’s book shortlisted for the Mackenzie Book Prize 2025-26
Content
A book by Dr Philip Rathgeb, Senior Lecturer in Social Policy at the School of Social and Political Science (SPS), has been shortlisted for the Political Studies Association (PSA) Mackenzie Book Prize 2025-26.
How the radical right has changed capitalism and welfare in Europe and the USA, published by Oxford University Press, is one of the select titles announced on this year’s shortlist.
The book explores how radical right parties have transitioned from political challengers on the fringes to become part of the political mainstream across the Western world. Dr Rathgeb’s research demonstrates how these parties have used their political power to reform economic and social policies in Continental Europe, Northern Europe, Eastern Europe, and the USA.
The work argues that the radical right's core ideology of nativism and authoritarianism informs their socio-economic policy preferences, while diverse welfare state contexts mediate their impacts—leading to variations such as trade protectionism, economic nationalism, and welfare chauvinism.
The Mackenzie Book Prize is awarded annually by the PSA to celebrate publications that make a distinctive contribution to advancing the field of Political Studies.
The winner will be announced at the Prizes Ceremony and Drinks Reception on 31 March during the PSA26 Annual Conference in Oxford.
