School of Social and Political Science

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Introduction

We strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive and reach their full potential.

Our School's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee works to ensure our values are aligned with the University of Edinburgh Equality and Diversity Strategy.

Our Values

The School of Social and Political Science is fully committed to promoting the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) among students and staff in all aspects of School life.

We understand how historical differences are socially constructed and affect the experiences of our staff and students. We, therefore, recognise the importance of creating and maintaining a community that values and embraces diversity in all it forms. Not only are we committed to promoting a culture of respect, inclusivity, and equity where all members of the School community feel supported and able to reach their full potential, but we are also dedicated to addressing and undoing the effects of systematic inequality and injustice to which our marginalised students and staff are subject.

We are committed to fostering a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion.

We believe that a diverse and inclusive community enriches the educational and social experience for all students and staff.

We are dedicated to promoting and supporting diversity in all its forms, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, faith and socio-economic background. We will actively work to eliminate discrimination and bias in all forms and promote equity in all aspects of our academic and professional activities. We are committed to creating a culture of inclusivity that values, respects and celebrates diversity, and encourages the full participation of all members of our community.

Our Mission

The School of Social and Political Science is dedicated to building a culture that embraces equality, diversity, and inclusion.

We recognise that a diverse and inclusive community enhances both academic and social experiences for students and staff alike. Our goal is to foster a supportive and respectful environment where everyone can flourish and achieve their full potential. We are committed to championing diversity in all its dimensions. We actively work to challenge and eliminate all forms of discrimination and bias, striving for equality and justice across all academic and professional spheres.

Our Vision

Our vision at the School of Social and Political Science is to cultivate an inclusive environment that honours and celebrates individual differences and encourages meaningful participation from every member of our community.

We aim to lead by example in advancing equality, diversity, and inclusion through open and fair recruitment and promotion practices, robust EDI training, and meaningful opportunities for student and staff development and advancement. By intentionally attracting and retaining a diverse group of students and staff and fostering an inclusive workplace culture, we seek to build a community where all individuals feel respected, supported, and empowered to achieve their best. Our commitment to broadening participation, enhancing access, and eliminating barriers reflects our vision of a future where diversity is embraced, inclusion is the norm, and everyone has an equal chance to thrive.
