PhD working title:

Imagining a Nation from Afar: A Historical Sociology of Indonesian Diasporic Media, 1903-1933

My research examines the historical sociology of Indonesian diasporic media during the colonial era, specifically between 1903 and 1933. The primary objective is to explore how the Indonesian diaspora imagined and promoted national identity and interests through diasporic media. Drawing on nationalism studies, diaspora studies, and media and communication studies, this research seeks to answer three key questions. First, what role did the Indonesian diaspora play in shaping the emergence of Indonesian nationalism from abroad? Second, how did the Indonesian diaspora use media to articulate and advocate for their national interests? Third, to what extent did diasporic media influence the development of Indonesian nationalism?
