Research interests

My PhD research is about the Japanese military and how it uses gender to create a strategic narrative of itself. I am particularly interested in how traditionally masculine martial qualities are ascribed to women, looking how this might affect notions of masculinity/femininity, the military's role in society, and ultimately Japanese security policy.

Outside of my current project, the general research themes I'm interested in are:

  • Gender in International Relations
  • East Asian Politics
  • Feminist Theory
  • Japan
  • International Security
