Background

Nicola Crowe is a PhD candidate in Advanced Care with Integrated Study, based within the University of Edinburgh's Advanced Care Research Centre. Her PhD project, "Exploring the health and social care priorities of people with long-term conditions", will investigate the extent to which local services delivered by Scotland's integrated care system align with the priorities and preferences of communities with complex care needs.

Prior to commencing her PhD, Nicola graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an MA (Hons) in Politics in 2022 and an MSc in Korean Studies in 2023. She also worked for 6 months as a Research Assistant at the University of Dundee, where she delivered the Careers Service's 'Disability and Employability Research Project'.

Nicola is skilled with qualitative research, and has experience undertaking mixed methods and interdisciplinary working. Her main research interests are the needs and experiences of people with disabilities and chronic illnesses - particularly in relation to the integration of and decision making around health and social care. She is also interested in exploring how educational, employment, and care organisations can better support neurodivergent people throughout their life courses.

Alongside her PhD, Nicola co-leads the University of Edinburgh's 'Disability and Chronic Illness Reading Group'. She is also conducting an independent research project to explore and improve the support available to neurodivergent postgraduate research students, funded by a University of Edinburgh Student Experience Grant.
