Research interests

I am interested in the ways we define and measure child maltreatment and adversity and how these can be used to map various trajectories across the life course. For my doctoral research I am exploring data-led techniques to operationalise an Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Measurement while exploring the correlation to reported perpetration and victimisation during adolescence using a contemporary British longitudinal cohort study.

Background

I have worked in violence prevention and child protection in both the field and in academia for the past 15 years. I started as a Human Geographer and I worked with both UNIFEM (now UN Women) Arab States Regional and Iraq Office and UNICEF Jordan Country Office in project management and monitoring and evaluation. I then completed my Masters in Public Health at the University of Edinburgh. I have worked on a variety of humanitarian, development and research projects including: Safe Schools, equitable access to education and psychosocial support for Iraqi refugees in Jordan, the Drivers of Violence Affecting Children, Child Marriage in Jordan post the Syrian conflict and most recently understanding the experiences and needs of children and young people bereaved by Intimate Partner Homicide in the UK & Ireland. I was a Research Fellow on the Evaluation of the NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay Safe School Programme, based in the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh when I embarked on my PhD.
