Research interests
My work focuses on nature-culture relationships predominantly in Scotland, set within broader global sustainability challenges of the 21st century. I focus on areas such as sustainable development, food and agriculture, cultural heritage (e.g. Gaelic language) and environment, community development and empowerment, land reform and ownership. I work mostly with critical theories in sociology, heritage studies and human geography, and have a particular interest in anarchist theory and praxis. I work with qualitative methods such as participatory methods, ethnography and discourse analysis.
PhD Supervision
I am interested in supervising projects that fit with my research interests, but I am open to projects beyond Scotland that take a critical approach to sustainability issues.
For PhD supervision inquiries, please contact me by October 1st of the year before you hope to begin your PhD (e.g. by 1st October 2025 for a PhD beginning in September 2026).
Applicants should begin by sending a research proposal, with sufficient time to work together to improve chances of a funding award. Please bear in mind that PhD funding is extremely competitive.
