Background

Andonea's research focus is on migration, borders, and immigration detention. In particular, she examines the role of carcerality in the governance of human migration. Andonea completed a PhD on the evolving practices of migration governance at sea and the ad hoc strategies of control that work to contain migrants in maritime geographies. A central theme of this thesis was the growing role of carceral practices in maritime migration governance. Andonea is presently a research fellow on the UKRI project 'Immigration Detention: Investigating the Expansion and Global Diffusion of a Failed Project'.
