What made you choose the University of Edinburgh?

From a young age, I have been deeply interested in understanding how mental health affects individuals and communities, especially across diverse cultures. As I have pursued this interest academically and through volunteer work, it has become clear to me that mental health is a global issue that requires interdisciplinary and culturally sensitive solutions. This realization led me to seek a program that not only offers academic excellence but also equips me to contribute meaningfully to the field of global mental health.

The University of Edinburgh’s MSc in Global Mental Health and Society was the perfect fit for this ambition. The University of Edinburgh is internationally renowned for its research in the social and health sciences, and its reputation as a leader in global mental health studies is a significant reason why I am drawn to this program. The combination of public health, sociology, and psychology provides a comprehensive framework to explore mental health issues on a global scale. This interdisciplinary approach is critical to understanding the complexities of mental health challenges, especially in low- and middle-income countries where social, cultural, and economic factors intertwine.

Moreover, the opportunity to learn from world-class faculty members who are actively involved in cutting-edge research is an exciting prospect. Edinburgh’s vibrant, multicultural environment further enhances the appeal of this program. The city’s diversity offers an invaluable opportunity to interact with peers and professionals from across the globe, deepening my understanding of how mental health challenges manifest in different cultural contexts. I am confident that this experience will broaden my perspective and prepare me to address mental health issues at both the local and international levels.

Finally, my personal and professional experiences have shaped my commitment to pursuing this course. Through volunteering, being a brand ambassador of various Indian Government mental health programmes & schemes, I have witnessed first-hand the impact of inadequate mental health support and the urgent need for more accessible, culturally relevant services.

These experiences have fuelled my passion for improving mental health care worldwide, and I believe that the University of Edinburgh’s MSc in Global Mental Health and Society will equip me with the skills and knowledge to make a meaningful contribution to this vital field.

The University of Edinburgh offers an education system that stands out in several key ways, especially in terms of teaching style, academic flexibility, and the overall student experience. One of the most significant differences lies in the teaching approach. At Edinburgh, there is a strong emphasis on critical thinking, independent research, and practical application of knowledge. Students are encouraged to engage in discussions, apply analytical skills, and explore real-world scenarios, which contrasts with the more theory-heavy, exam-focused system that is common in India.

How have you enjoyed your programme?

As an international student, the experience at the University of Edinburgh, especially in a program like Global Mental Health and Society, is immensely rewarding. The cultural diversity on campus creates a unique environment where students from all over the world come together, offering the opportunity to learn from varied perspectives and build a global network. The academic flexibility and focus on critical thinking and independent research are often highlighted as key strengths, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests. Faculty members are supportive, and the university offers extensive resources to help students adjust to the academic rigor. The chance to engage in projects that address global mental health challenges and collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds is a deeply enriching experience.
